Severn Trent’s River Protection team is expanding, and we have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced River Systems Scientist to help deliver healthier, more resilient rivers across our region.
You’ll play a key role in analysing river water quality, leading investigations, and turning complex data into clear, insights that support investment, regulatory compliance and long-term environmental improvement.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical, analytical, and communication skills, enabling them to influence senior stakeholders and provide actionable, evidence-based recommendations.

Some of your key accountabilities will include:
- Lead river health investigations: Coordinate stakeholders, assess diverse datasets, apply standardised methods, and present clear, well supported findings.
- Interpret and assure data: Analyse complex multi-source datasets (e.g., water quality metrics, modelling outputs, asset information), identify trends, manage uncertainties, and contribute to regulatory reporting and assurance.
- Act as an internal expert: Provide clear, evidence-based advice that supports decision making and communicates risks, uncertainties, and trade-offs.
- Engage stakeholders: Build constructive relationships with communities, regulators, NGOs, and industry partners to support river related programmes.
- Promote transparent data use: Share insights within the business and with the public, using maps and interactive tools while managing data sharing risks and supporting citizen science initiatives.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an engaging individual with strong expertise in rivers, water chemistry and aquatic environmental – qualified to degree level in a relevant environmental discipline or hold a minimum three years’ experience in river science or environmental data analysis.
The role requires an individual with strong analytical and data management skills, able to identify, quality assure, process, and visualise complex environmental datasets to produce robust analyses that inform real-world decision-making.
We want someone proficient in Microsoft Office tools, specifically Excel to analyse data (including the ability to write formulas and use pivot tables) and experience using Power BI or programming languages would be highly advantageous.
Strong organisational and project management skills are essential to the role as you will be expected to prioritise workloads whilst adopting a continuous improvement mindset.
Due to the operational nature of the team and work required, travel is expected across the region and therefore a full UK driving license is necessary.
