If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you. There really is something for everyone here.

Within our Capital Design and Delivery department, we are looking for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Water treatment team based in one of our design offices at Finham, Coventry, Raynesway, Derby or Shelton, Shropshire

Well, if you are, read on.

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Reporting to the Design Manager, the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will provide design and oversight of technical solutions for water treatment schemes for Severn Trent’s design department.  You will undertake feasibility, outline, and detailed design for projects within agreed timescales and budgets. You will create mechanical designs and specifications and support the wider design team to develop Severn Trent’s in-house design capability.

On a day-to-day basis, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, and support various project delivery teams.

You will undertake high level appraisal and feasibility of conceptual designs to create innovative and efficient TOTEX solutions, undertaking the role of Principal Designer in accordance with CDM regulations.

You will drive H&S, undertake risk management, challenge designs and ensure that appropriate support is provided to the programme team so that the solution is delivered efficiently on time and in line with specifications.

You will contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Mechanical Design Standards.

As a Subject Matter Expert in pumps and pumping systems, you will undertake surveys and feasibility assessments, design of complex pumping systems or be responsible for the design acceptance of the contractor’s design.

You will help developing and mentoring apprentices, graduates and design engineers throughout the design function to grow the individual’s skills, capabilities and qualifications.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

Ideally qualified in Mechanical Engineering, and holding chartered engineer status or equivalent expertise, you will be an experienced principal design engineer with some experience in water treatment design. You will have experience of providing designs and specifications for commercial negotiations and a proven track record of continuous development of innovative solutions in the delivery of water treatment projects.

You will have experience working with a diverse team of different skillsets and building capacity and mentoring other engineers. You will have extensive experience of implementing CDM regulations in the design process and strong understanding of risk management in construction and operational design.

You will have excellent internal and external stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of people. You will be a forward-thinking innovator, capable of anticipating challenges and responding to change in a rapidly evolving environment. You will be able to make educated judgments and decisions in the face of ambiguity, and have a good grasp of the bigger picture, seeking opportunities to contribute to the wider agenda.

You will have experience analysing and designing complex pumping systems, including hydraulic calculations for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, surge analysis and CFD modelling / physical modelling. You will have experience in the selection of suitable pump types for the given application, and in both factory and field testing of pumps.

You will be familiar with best practice sump and pipework design across a variety of pump installations. Ideally, you will also have experience of commissioning complex pumping systems, and a working knowledge of WIMES specifications and pumping system control philosophies.

The right skills and experience are important. But if you have the right character, positivity and a caring attitude we want to talk to you, too.
