We're looking for a highly capable Senior Laboratory Technician to support the River Water Quality Monitoring (RWQM) programme on a 12 month Fixed Term Contract. 

You’ll manage the calibration, maintenance, and registration of water quality monitoring equipment to ensure full compliance with environmental regulatory requirements and deliver accurate, reliable data by upholding industry quality standards.

You will be responsible for supporting day-to-day laboratory operations, and contributing technical expertise to method development, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

In this role, you’ll play a key part in helping Severn Trent meet its commitments in ensuring that we understand, protect and enhance the quality of rivers across our region.

Some of your other key accountabilities will include:

  • Plan and prioritise workloads to meet operational deadlines and respond to changing priorities.

  • Support the implementation and optimisation of laboratory methods and processes.

  • Conduct quality control checks, maintain accurate equipment records, and ensure full audit trails.

  • Deliver training and coaching to laboratory technicians and contribute to competency assessments.

 

  • Provide technical troubleshooting and liaise with internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturers.

  • Maintain stock levels of consumables, reagents, and equipment to support continuous operations.


You may be required to participate in standby rota cover

 You’ll be based at our Church Wilne Site in Nottingham.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for someone qualified in environmental sciences, ideally chemistry, or hold a minimum of three years laboratory experience that can hit the ground running. Having a passion for and existing knowledge around water quality processes and river health would be ideal.

The role requires strong analytical and methodical thinking, excellent problemsolving abilities, and high attention to detail.

We want someone with a continuous improvement mindset to create new laboratory methods and to develop and optimise existing methods and procedures when necessary.

We want people with excellent stakeholder management skills as you will be required to interact with various teams across the business as well as acting as an ambassador for Severn Trent.


In order to succeed in this role, it is expected that you will have: 

  • Experience in data analysis.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work streams.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Previous experience of working in a regulated environment.
  • HNC/HND in a relevant science-based subject (degree level would be highly desirable) or minimum of 3 years laboratory experience.
