EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
We are looking for a Compex Electrical Engineer (Competence in Explosive Atmospheres) / DSEAR Responsible Person (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) to join our Asset Planning team.
You’ll take the lead in ensuring our sites and equipment meet safety standards for working with potentially explosive substances, in line with DSEAR regulations. Acting as the Technical Person with Executive Function, you’ll be the go-to expert for all things DSEAR-related.
You’ll develop and implement processes that demonstrate compliance, support teams across the business with risk assessments and technical advice, and manage inspection and improvement programmes with external partners. You’ll also interpret technical documents and ensure everyone involved understands what’s required.
Working closely with colleagues in operations, engineering, and safety, you’ll help build a strong culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the organisation.
Key accountabilities include:
- Ensure DSEAR compliance by working with internal teams and external partners.
- Develop and manage inspection and maintenance schedules for hazardous area assets.
- Act as the Responsible Person under BS EN 60079-14 & 17 and Authorising Engineer for CompEx roles.
- Coach and support electrical maintainers to maintain competency.
- Audit compliance with DSEAR standards and review inspection reports to guide risk management.
- Review technical drawings and certification for hazardous area equipment.
- Maintain and improve internal procedures to meet legal requirements.
- Oversee DSEAR documentation for projects and support business-wide competence development.
- Advise operational teams on managing DSEAR risks.
- Collaborate across the business to reduce health and safety risks.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
To succeed in this role, you’ll need a strong understanding of electrical engineering, including the ability to read and assess technical drawings. You’ll have practical knowledge of explosion protection principles and relevant standards, along with experience identifying and managing electrical ignition risks.
Ideally, you’ll have experience managing electrical installations, mentoring technical staff, and working with consultants. A good understanding of DSEAR regulations, hazardous area assessments, and health and safety risk management is desirable.
You’ll be a strong communicator with excellent planning, analytical, and influencing skills. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, you’ll be able to prioritise effectively, see the bigger picture, and use tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with ease.
You’ll need to be a fully qualified electrical engineer or electrician (Degree, HND, HNC, or NVQ Level 3), with a valid CompEx Ex14 Responsible Person qualification or CompEx Ex01–04 certification and relevant experience. You should have hands-on experience working in DSEAR hazardous areas, including knowledge of Exd, Exe, and Exi protection methods.
A solid understanding of key IEC standards (such as IEC 60079 series) is essential, along with a full UK driving licence.
