Econometrician

At Severn Trent, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We’re in the top 5% of utility companies worldwide when it comes to employee engagement and ranked as a Top 50 UK Employer on Glassdoor. Join us in making a positive impact on the environment and our communities, while being valued and supported in a truly inclusive workplace.

If you want to do more, because you care, we want you on our team.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

We’re one of the UK’s largest regulated water and wastewater companies, serving millions of customers across the Midlands and North Wales. We’ve just wrapped up a successful price review (PR24), where our business plan was rated “Outstanding” by Ofwat—one of only two companies to achieve that. We’re now gearing up for the next chapter: delivering for our customers from 2025 to 2030 and shaping the future of regulation.

Why this role matters

This is a great time to join our Economic Regulation team as our next Econometrician. We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about using data and economic insight to help us stay ahead. You’ll play a key role in helping us influence how future costs are assessed by regulators—making sure our plans are fair, efficient, and deliver real value for customers and the environment.

What you’ll be doing

In simple terms, your job is to help us understand and improve how costs are modelled in the water sector. That means:

  • Championing smart modelling: You’ll explore and promote better ways to use econometric and statistical methods in regulatory reviews.
  • Shaping our submissions: You’ll help craft high-quality, evidence-based reports that show how we’re delivering efficiently.
  • Supporting the business: You’ll advise other teams on cost modelling and help them understand the impact of regulatory decisions.
  • Digging into the data: You’ll work with internal and external data to uncover insights about productivity, inflation, and cost pressures.
  • Staying curious: You’ll keep asking questions about how economic and engineering factors influence our costs—and how we can do things better.

You'll be based at our Severn Trent Centre in Coventry. With this being such a critical role, we’re looking for someone who can join us 37 hours a week. You’ll be joining Severn Trent’s experienced, supportive and successful Economic Regulation team.  At the last two price reviews we have helped Severn Trent secure Ofwat’s top rating: “fast track” at PR19 and “outstanding” at PR24.  We have a lot of continuity in our team and are aiming high at the next price review.

HOW WE WORK

WFH flexibility available: You'll join a caring culture that collaborates to achieve, grow, and develop. Our employee engagement scores are among the highest globally in energy and utilities. That’s why, we value in-person moments to keep our culture alive but also understand the flexibility working from home can bring. So, you'll usually find us in the office, but working from home is supported, when you need it.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for someone who’s comfortable with numbers and curious about how things work. Ideally, you’ll have:

  • Experience with econometric modelling and tools like Stata.
  • A knack for explaining complex ideas clearly.
  • The ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • A background in economics, statistics, maths, engineering, or a similar field.

Bonus points if you’ve worked in a regulated industry or contributed to regulatory submissions before!

Skills and experience are important, but character, positivity, and a caring attitude matter too. We welcome and celebrate diverse individuals, knowing they help us better serve our communities. We seek people who get involved, want to be part of something bigger, and make a difference because they care.

It’s not just a job you’ll get here, you’ll get a career too.
