Senior Network Engineer
Want to solve one of the biggest environmental challenges in the water industry? Play a leading role in protecting our rivers and communities by tackling infiltration at its source. Our people make Severn Trent a truly exciting and inclusive place to work – a place where you can be yourself and let your engineering skills shine.
Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care. We are launching a landmark, multi-million-pound programme to transform how we manage our wastewater network, with a major focus on tackling groundwater infiltration.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Network Engineer to join our team and focus on our wastewater network challenges. While infiltration is a major priority, your broad expertise and skills will be vital in shaping our overall approach to network investigation and diagnosis. This role can be based from Coventry, or Derby.
Are you a natural problem-solver who thrives on the complex technical challenges and wants to leave a lasting legacy? If you are driven to find the root cause of network issues and turn that insight into tangible solutions, we want to hear from you!
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
In this role you’ll provide technical support for our strategic investigations into network performance, with a primary focus on infiltration. This includes conducting desk-based studies, and managing field investigation teams to systematically diagnose issues in our highest-priority catchments. As a senior technical expert for the programme, you will provide essential engineering support and oversight across multiple workstreams. Your expertise will ensure that the correct interventions are applied to solve complex network problems.
Key accountabilities include:
- You'll play a pivotal role in transforming investigation data into a clear and prioritised action plan, working closely with analysts and project managers to build robust business cases for intervention.
- Develop and implement new and improved asset standards for both investigation and repair, working through the entire lifecycle of the projects to see your efforts turn into reality.
- Provide vital technical guidance to our innovation workstream, supporting the identification, trialling, and evaluation of new technologies and techniques to solve a range of network challenges.
- Offer support to other team members, developing a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
Ideally, we’re looking for someone with a strong technical background in wastewater networks, however, we are open to this being within one of the following areas: Waste networks assets, systems, hydraulics, asset performance, operational management, or failure modes. We also welcome candidates with expertise in different areas, such as network operations, asset management, or hydrogeology.
You should bring proven experience in technical investigation or operational problem-solving, with a track record of diagnosing complex issues. A highly analytical and methodical approach is essential. Excellent communication skills are also key, as you will need to clearly explain complex technical challenges and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. We value a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
Ideally your experience will have a background in civil engineering, environmental science, or a related field such as hydraulic modelling or wastewater engineering. Familiarity with project management principles and developing business cases for asset interventions is also an advantage. Chartership with a relevant institution (e.g. CIWEM, ICE, IAM) or working towards it would be a plus, but is not essential.
