EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
As our Principal Engineer within the River Health Team, you’ll lead the assessment and development of options to reduce storm overflow spills across the wastewater network and treatment systems. This includes introducing innovative approaches and deploying them at scale and pace to improve environmental outcomes.
You’ll be responsible for conducting site assessments, managing surveys, and analysing data within agreed timescales and budgets. Your work will consider a wide range of factors including health and safety, environmental impact, buildability, customer experience, third-party permissions, and compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
In this role, you’ll work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver solutions that meet customer needs and regulatory standards set by OFWAT and the Environment Agency. Additionally, you’ll support the technical development of the team through mentoring, coaching, and identifying growth opportunities for colleagues
Key accountabilities will include:
- Lead the appraisal and development of innovative, cost-effective TOTEX solutions, ensuring alignment with design standards and assurance processes.
- Gather and validate data to identify root causes of spills and define effective solutions.
- Assess delivery and operational risks, including health & safety, environmental impact, commissioning, and maintenance.
- Determine and cost appropriate solutions in collaboration with commercial teams, contributing to governance and decision-making forums.
- Adhere to and help evolve design standards, supporting the adoption of new, innovative approaches.
- Collaborate with the supply chain to drive innovation, share best practices, and embed improvements into standard processes.
- Provide technical support to delivery teams, ensuring solutions are implemented to specification and successfully commissioned.
- Review completed projects, evaluate benefits, and share lessons learned to inform future designs and standards.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
To succeed in this role, you’ll ideally bring experience from the wastewater sector, with a strong understanding of modelling tools such as InfoWorks or HADES for sewers, rivers, and surface water. You should be confident using these tools to develop outline designs that support rapid project delivery.
You’ll have a proven track record in managing modelling and early-stage feasibility work, alongside extensive experience in producing designs and specifications for wastewater projects. A flair for innovation in design is essential, helping to shape creative and effective solutions.
Familiarity with industry standards, codes, and design manuals is also important, ensuring your work consistently meets technical and regulatory requirements.
You should hold a degree in Engineering, Science, or an Environmental discipline, or have completed further education through a structured Modern Apprenticeship scheme. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent experience is desirable, along with a full UK driving licence.
