Technical Specialist - Environment & Water Quality

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
This role is working on the inter-water company Strategic Resource Options programme, looking at how to reduce drought risk for water companies across the country. Severn Trent are involved in seven schemes that are being funded through AMP8 including the flagship Grand Union Canal Transfer and Severn to Thames Transfer. This role will focus on support to deliver the environmental and water quality aspects for these schemes. This is a great opportunity to work on a nationally significant infrastructure project.
As a Technical Specialist, your responsibility will be to:
- Work in multi-disciplinary teams to support the client-side delivery of environmental and water quality investigations for Severn Trent’s Strategic Resource Options.
- Support engagement with regulators and third parties to ensure clear understanding of requirements and to help shape investigation priorities.
- Support the management of technical work packages delivered by consultants to ensure they deliver the requirements in line with the relevant consenting requirements and RAPID guidance.
- Undertake high-level environmental screening and assessments of options, aligning with the WRMP option appraisal process.
- Analyse data from sampling and surveys to understand the implications on a scheme’s environmental and water quality compliance.
For this, you’ll need to support the management of, and contribute to technical work packages being delivered by consultants to ensure they deliver the required outcomes for the SRO.
This means you’ll need to contribute to building trust with regulators to make sure we’re getting the right information to answer the questions they are posing.
You will work with technical experts inside and outside the organisation. It will be pivotal to build relations with internal experts to get the best outcome for Severn Trent from the SRO’s.
This role will require knowledge of many aspects of environmental and water quality investigation. You will be required to support production of environmental and water quality sections of regulatory submissions to RAPID.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
We would expect that the successful candidate has a degree in relevant environmental, science or hydrology-related discipline.
A candidate with the ability to successfully deliver on multiple commitments under pressure, understanding and applying a relevant level of quality to each piece of work.
Someone who has a successful track record of working in infrastructure planning/design, SEA/EIA, HRA, WFD or environmental permits would be beneficial.
Evidence of collaborative working with consultants, engineers, project managers, other water companies and regulators.
Specifically, we would be looking for prior experience in the below:
- A background in a relevant environmental, science or hydrology related discipline
- Experience co-ordinating environmental surveys and technical specialists’ input
- A track record of building a network of technical experts within and external to your company
- Experience of environmental permitting, EIA, DCO and/or WRMP processes would be beneficial
- The ability to provide or interpret technical advice/reports and communicate this to various parties at an appropriate level of detail
- Strong analytical skills, with ability to quickly assimilate information, think broadly and ask questions about data, facts and other information
- Experience of project management, budget control and supporting projects
- The candidate should be working towards achieving chartership (or already chartered)
