Forest Ranger

Hello, we’re Severn Trent and we think water is wonderful. Oh, we’re pretty keen on people too.

24 hours a day, 365 days a year we serve 4.8 million households and business across the heart of the UK. Each cuppa drank and every toilet flushed is only possible because of the 6,500 brilliant team members working across our patch.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality. We know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our customers and the communities where they live.

If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you. There really is something for everyone here.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our Water Quality and Environment team have an opportunity for you to join as our new Forest Ranger.

In your new role, you’ll be directly responsible for our 74 Tiny Forests and growing number of Commonwealth Games Legacy Forest sites. You will also work on existing woodland sites as required. You will work with our existing Forest Ranger to help the team grow and shape Severn Trent Waters’ new and existing woodland sites. You will be responsible for general forest management, contract supervision support and carrying out a range of key surveys including re-stock and deer impact assessments; stocking density assessments; dangerous tree surveys; post-planting site checks; and minor maintenance works.

You will join the existing Forestry Team and your role will form a crucial part of our work as the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 carbon offset and biodiversity partner. You will agree works plans, liaise with partners and contractors, and make sure that project goals and annual targets are met. Your role will involve managing contracts to deliver our legacy forest commitments whilst adhering to all relevant guidance and legislation.

You will also act as an ambassador for our work – using your communication and influencing skills to engage customers, partners and stakeholders with the positive steps we are taking to improve the natural environment in our region.

The role will require you to travel to woodland sites throughout the Severn Trent region.

Some of your other key accountabilities will include:

•    Carry out a programme of site checks and surveys of both the Tiny Forest and Legacy Forest sites (you will be directly responsible for approximately half these sites) to inform maintenance and management planning.
•    Establish a re-stock programme working closely with the Assistant Forestry Manager.
•    Carry out practical site-based work where appropriate, including small-scale tree care and re-stock, vegetation clearance and minor infrastructure repairs.
•    Assist the Assistant Forestry Manager in the supervision of contractors during tree planting and maintenance work, ensuring all work is compliant with health and safety requirements.
•    Responsible for recording information gathered and reporting to managers, using software such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
•    Liaise in a professional manner with landowners, tenants, community groups, schools and the public as required.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

As Forest Ranger you will be experienced in communicating and influencing and engaging with our customers, partners, and stakeholders.

To be successful, it’s expected that you’ll have experience of practical land management, forestry or conservation work, tree care, and site-based health and safety management.

You’ll also have excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work using your own initiative and supervise contractors.

You must be comfortable and capable of working alone and managing your time and workload appropriately, working closely with the existing Ranger to plan your work independently.

As frequent travel is expected, a full driving licence will be required.

The right skills and experience are important. But if you have the right character, positivity, and a caring attitude we would love to talk to you too.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We want people who show up and get involved. Those who are ready to be part of something bigger and who want to make a difference because they care. Is that you?
