Civil/Structural Design Engineer

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.

AMP8, our current five-year regulatory period, will deliver nearly £13bn of investment, of which £6bn will be delivered through our capital programme.

Our  “Plug and Play” approach promotes the use of  standard, modular components that can be easily combined into ready-made solutions.

This innovative programme aims to tackle challenges in waste and water infrastructure, flooding, and water quality—bringing lasting benefits to communities, public health, and the environment.

For this role this means:

  • Designing standard structural solutions (e.g. slabs, foundations, support structures)
  • Ensuring they can be built smarter, faster, and more efficiently across multiple sites
  • Driving improvements in safety, quality, sustainability and cost

This is an opportunity to work on high-impact engineering challenges and influence the future of infrastructure delivery

LET’S CUT STRAIGHT TO IT

We are looking for a Civil/Structural Design Engineer with strong experience in foundations, slabs, and structural systems to join our innovative Plug & Play team.

This is a design-led role where you will help develop standardised, repeatable structural solutions for major infrastructure projects, supporting one of the UK’s largest capital investment programmes.

You’ll play a key role in shaping how we design and deliver assets smarter, faster, and more efficiently, ensuring structural solutions are robust, buildable, and cost-effective.

You will deliver projects to programme, within budget, to the correct quality standards. Be part of developing the future design team!

  • Deliver solutions from concept through to detailed design
  • Undertake structural calculations, checks, and design assurance
  • Use CAD and digital tools, structural analysis and design software and office tools.

Technical Leadership

  • Review and challenge designs from external consultants
  • Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, British Standards, and project specifications
  • Provide pragmatic, problem-solving input to complex engineering challenges

Innovation & Standardisation

  • Contribute to developing repeatable / standard design products
  • Design for optimisation towards the limits of standards
  • Improve designs based on lessons learned, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Support development of design manuals and technical standards

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and suppliers
  • Ensure designs are buildable, safe, and suited to site conditions
  • Support installation, commissioning, and product implementation

Risk & Quality

  • Identify and manage structural and construction risks
  • Ensure designs meet requirements across:

    • Health & Safety (CDM)
    • Constructability
    • Durability and whole-life performance

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Essential Experience

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Significant experience in structural design, particularly:

    • Foundations and ground-bearing systems
    • Reinforced concrete slabs
    • Structural elements for infrastructure projects

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • Eurocodes and UK design standards
    • Structural analysis and design tools

  • Experience reviewing and coordinating consultant designs
  • Proven ability to solve problems and drive practical solutions

Key Attributes

  • Analytical and solution-oriented mindset
  • Innovative and open to new ways of working
  • Collaborative with strong stakeholder engagement skills

Desirable

  • Experience in water, wastewater, or infrastructure sectors
  • Exposure to standardised or modular design approaches
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and designer duties
  • Chartered or working towards (ICE / IStructE)
  • Experience supporting cost optimisation or value engineering
